collection

I love collecting things. most especially shells on a beach. most of the time I put them back after the vacation is over unless I find a real treasure. but this year around april when I was at the beach for easter I collected several of the same kind of shell with the below project in mind. I thought it might be nice to do this with different shell types and locales every summer. I also plan to make a few extra for our hosts, a lovely thank you gift me thinks. easy enough to make, purchase a shadow box (this one is 8×8 whitewashed) and layout your shells on a nice textured piece of paper (this is arches watercolor paper) and when you’re happy with the layout go ahead and adhere (I used hot glue). Be sure to neatly pencil in where and when you gathered your collection. Assemble frame and hang or gift. happy friday.

outstanding in the field

outstandinginthefieldI’ve been obsessed with this idea from Outstanding in the Field since I first heard about it last year. Unfortunately I won’t be in town for the NYC dinner. But here’s how I imagine it feeling….enter to a mile long table set simply with linen cloths, sparkling glassware, vintage silverware and twinkling candlelight. The smell of local delicacies wafts through the air and a waiter in a crisp white apron over laid back pedestrian clothes presents me with a juicy glass of red. A crisp breeze reminds me of autumn and we sit to enjoy great conversation about all the local food being placed before us and cheers to this amazing moment in time. So, has anyone been and want to share what it’s really like? Til next season, cheers to OITF.

floor as art

oh, this is just to good not to mention. the thought of printed flooring seems a little off and maybe a little tacky looking…but my thoughts have been proven wrong with this stunning flooring from Model Hardwwod. How wonderful would this be as an inset (like a built in rug) in a bathroom.

Winter Scene

Winter Display

Warm up a cozy corner in your home with this super simple winter table scheme. Most of the supplies can be found in your front yard (unless you’re a city dweller like me, then collect all your goods while you visit family over the holidays!) Or visit your local garden supply store and craft store and pick up:

8-12 medium size branches (these are pussy willow branches with no buds)
3-4 vessels in various sizes
12-15 vintage chandelier crystals
Pinecones
candles and candle holders
yarn or string and scissors

Start by laying out your branches and arrange your vases – I like to put the larger one towards the back. Add in your branches. Add a little warmth to some of the branches by wrapping them in yarn. I choose an off-white with flacks of brown. Just do a few. Next add your chandelier crystals to some branches. Keep in mind the vintage crystals are heavy, so they’ll need to be supported by the larger heavier branches. Position candlesticks on each side and then add in your vase of snow covered pine cones. Take a step back and make sure it looks balanced and if you were able to find some larger pine cones, lay them in front for some added dimension. This lovely display will look great through to Valentine’s Day! View more images here.

Add Sparkle….

bonne année! vintage tinsel adds sparkle to any table!

Add a little sparkle to your any table setting with vintage tinsel ribbon…simply cut and tie around a champagne or wine glass – even used to secure a guest napkin would look lovely too!  Bonne Année!

Snow Covered Pinecones

Snow covered Pinecones

The simplicity of snow covered pinecones nested in a large glass vase is just lovely. I made these the week after Thanksgiving to add just a bit of winter to the home…My initial plan was to tuck them in our Christmas tree once we got it. Until then I displayed them in this big glass vase. But they look to perfect in the vase, so there they stayed in all their festiveness! TO MAKE: simply paint on some glue (I used modge podge) to the edges of the pinecones – thinking of where snow would naturally lay if it fell on the pinecones. Then simply choose your favorite glitter (I used crystal size glitter so it looked more like flakes than the glitter dust.) Let dry, dust off loose crystals and wa-la! A perfect winter decoration you can display well after the holidays have passed.
